本月份為華人的"鬼月" 比利介紹幾句有關於"鬼"的英文慣用語

not a ghost of a chance 毫無希望-----

if someone does not have a ghost of a chance, they are not at all likely to succeed

Example:

Billy has applied for a study at Harvard University, but he has not a ghost of a chance.

比利已申請哈佛大學研究，可是他毫無希望。

give up the ghost 失效/不能使用-----

1. to stop trying to do something because you know that you will not succeed

Example:

Billy 'd been trying to get into the school for two years without success and finally decided to give up the ghost.

比利努力兩年要進入那個學校，沒有成功，最後決定放棄。

2. if a machine gives up the ghost, it stops working

Example:

I've used the scooter for fifteen years and I'm afraid it's ready to give up the ghost.

我那輛機車已經用了十五年,恐怕是要報廢了. (Billy 8/26/2012)
